We present the catalog of sources detected in the first 22 months of data from the hard X-ray survey (14-195 keV) conducted with the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) coded mask imager on the Swift satellite. The catalog contains 461 sources detected above the 4.8σ level with BAT. High angular resolution X-ray data for every source from Swift-XRT or archival data have allowed associations to be made with known counterparts in other wavelength bands for over 97% of the detections, including the discovery of ∼30 galaxies previously unknown as active galactic nuclei and several new Galactic sources. A total of 266 of the sources are associated with Seyfert galaxies (median redshift z ∼ 0.03) or blazars, with the majority of the remaining sources associated with X-ray binaries in our Galaxy. This ongoing survey is the first uniform all-sky hard X-ray survey since HEAO-1 in 1977. Since the publication of the nine-month BAT survey we have increased the number of energy channels from four to eight and have substantially increased the number of sources with accurate average spectra. The BAT 22 month catalog is the product of the most sensitive all-sky survey in the hard X-ray band, with a detection sensitivity (4.8σ) of 2.2 × 10 −11 erg cm −2 s −1 (1 mCrab) over most of the sky in the 14-195 keV band.

The bright X-ray source 2XMMi J180438.7−145647 is fortunate to have long baseline observations in INTEGRAL that complement observations taken by other missions. Optical spectroscopy of this object has suggested a distance of ∼7 kpc and an identification with a low-mass X-ray binary. We instead use the X-ray data from 0.3 to 40 keV to identify the source as a bright intermediate polar (IP) with an estimate for the white dwarf mass of ∼0.60 M . This identification is supported by the presence of an iron triplet, the component lines of which are some of the strongest seen in IPs, and the signature of the spin period of the white dwarf at ∼24 min. We note that the lack of broad-band variability may suggest that this object is a stream-fed IP, similar in many respects to the well-studied IP, V2400 Oph. Phase binning has allowed us to create spectra corresponding to the peaks and troughs of the light curve from which we determine that the spectra appear harder in the troughs, consistent with the behaviour of other IPs binned on their spin periods. This work strongly suggests a misidentification in the optical due to the presence of large columns of enshrouding material. We instead propose a distance to the source of <2.5 kpc to be consistent with the luminosities of other IPs in the dim, hard state. The considerable flux of the source together with the strength of the iron lines may, in future, allow the source to be used to diagnose the properties of the shock-heated plasma and the reflected component of the emission.

Aims. We study the hard X-ray luminosity function and absorption distribution of local (z 0.1) active galactic nuclei (AGN) and discuss the implications for AGN cosmological evolution and for the cosmic X-ray background (CXB). Methods. We use the INTEGRAL all-sky hard X-ray survey to perform a statistical study of a representative sample of nearby AGN. Our entire all-sky sample consists of 127 AGN, of which 91 are confidently detected (>5σ) on the time-averaged map obtained with the IBIS/ISGRI instrument and 36 are detected only during single observations. Among the former there are 66 non-blazar AGN located at |b| > 5• , where the survey's identification completeness is ∼93%, which we use for calculating the AGN luminosity function and X-ray absorption distribution. Results. In broad agreement with previous studies, we find that the fraction f a of obscured (log N H > 22) objects is much higher (∼70%) among the low-luminosity AGN (L hx < 10 43.6 erg s −1 ) than among the high-luminosity ones (L hx > 10 43.6 erg s −1 ), f a ∼ 25%, where L hx is the luminosity in the 17-60 keV energy band. We also find that locally the fraction of Compton-thick AGN is less than 20% unless there is a significant population of AGN that are so strongly obscured that their observed hard X-ray luminosities fall below ∼1040 -10 41 erg s −1 , the effective limit of our survey. The constructed hard X-ray luminosity function has a canonical, smoothly broken power-law shape in the range 40 < log L hx < 45.5 with a characteristic luminosity of log L * = 43.40 ± 0.28. The estimated local luminosity density due to AGN with log L hx > 40 is (1.4 ± 0.3) × 10 39 erg s −1 Mpc −3 (17-60 keV). We demonstrate that the spectral shape and amplitude of the CXB are consistent with the simple scenario in which the N H distribution of AGN (for a given L hx /L * (z) ratio) has not changed significantly since z ∼ 1.5, while the AGN luminosity function has experienced pure luminosity evolution.
