New AMS radiocarbon dates for the North Ferriby boats—a contribution to dating prehistoric seafaring in northwestern Europe

Abstract: A new series of radiocarbon measurements on three sewn-plank boats from North Ferriby, Yorkshire, has provided consistent new dating for these craft, which suggests that the appearance of such boats may fall in the early Bronze Age.

“…The earliest evidence for sewn‐plank vessels is provided by the Ferriby 3 vessel, dated to 2030–1780 BC (Wright et al . ). The social context that gave rise to them, and their impact on other societies along the Atlantic façade, suggest that this might have been a key turning point in Atlantic interconnections.…”

“…Wiggle-matching of floating tree-ring series has allowed a number of sites to be precisely dated (Bayliss et al , 2003bBayliss and Pryor 2001;Masefield et al 2004), yet this really has led only to wider discussion of the impact of the introduction of sewnplank boat technology into northwestern Europe (van der Noort et al 1999;Wright et al 2001). …”

“…The boats constructed of sewn planks found on the foreshore at North Ferriby, within the Humber Estuary in north‐eastern England (Fig. 1), are the earliest of their kind found outside Egypt (Wright et al ., 2001). The evidence suggests that complex composite boats were being constructed and used within this area from the early Bronze Age until well into the Iron Age.…”

“…An overview of the Ferriby boats is given in Table 1, and more detail can be found elsewhere (Wright, 1990, Wright et al ., 2001). Ferriby 1 was discovered in 1937 by E. V. and C. W. Wright (Wright and Wright, 1939), but not excavated until 1946.…”
