New Anti-HIV-1, Antimalarial, and Antifungal Compounds from Terminalia bellerica

Abstract: A bioactivity-guided fractionation of an extract of Terminalia bellerica fruit rind led to the isolation of two new lignans named termilignan (1) and thannilignan (2), together with 7-hydroxy-3',4'-(methylenedioxy)flavan (3) and anolignan B (4). All four compounds possessed demonstrable anti-HIV-1, antimalarial, and antifungal activity in vitro.

“…The chemical shifts were recorded in ppm (δ units) in relation to TMS as an internal standard. Pulse conditions were as follows: for 1 H NMR, dwell time (DW) 149.600 µs, acquisition time (AQ) 3.985 s, number of transients (NS) 16, recycle delay (RD) 1.000 s; for 13 C NMR spectra, DW 31.400 µs, AQ 2.058 s, NS 1024, RD 2.000 s, decoupling multiple resonance method Waltz-16; and for the NOESY contour maps, DW 113.600 µs, AQ 0.233 s, NS 16, RD 2.000 s, mixing time 200 ms, time evolution 3 µs, TD 2048 (F 2 ) and 512 (F 1 ).…”
