New backing layer for transdermal drug delivery systems: coatings based on fatty acid and beeswax on chitosan films

Abstract: Fatty acids and beeswax are known to improve barrier properties of biodegradable materials. Thanks to their hydrophobic character, they can act as a barrier against water giving to the material more occlusive properties. This work was aimed at preparing fatty acid and beeswax coatings for a transdermal drug delivery system. In order to study occlusive properties of these coatings, water vapor permeability and contact angle measurements were carried out. The most homogeneous coatings were obtained from the bees… Show more

“…In this way the surface of coatings is enriched with the hydrophilic regions of micelles and the polar groups being more available for interaction with water. Equivalent findings were evidenced also by Rullier-Birat et al [ 68 ] when incorporating beeswax into emulsified chitosan-based coatings. Slightly higher value of the contact angle in the case CEO-loaded coating compared with AVO-loaded one can be attributed to the stronger interactions that occurred between the main compound of clove oil (eugenol) and chitosan.…”

“…(2016), maximum force interprets the tensile strength of each film, while the elongation at break explains the elasticity and flexibility of each film. Coatings made from emulsified beeswax exhibit high hydrophobic properties and relatively good mechanical properties (Rullier‐Birat et al ., 2015).…”

“…C oil , C layer ) effects were negative and not statistically significant, reducing the WVTR of the active systems. The water vapour barrier was improved by adding palm oil 46 and beeswax, 47 associating with the lipid presence that increased the hydrophobicity of the chitosan coating matrix. Jeong and Yoo 48 evaluated the effect of the beeswax addition in whey protein concentrate-sucrose coating on paperboard's moisture and oil-barrier properties.…”
