The Upper Cretaceous Yambol-Burgas region of the Eastern Srednogorie continental arc is characterized by unusually large volumes of mafic shoshonitic and ultra-K magmatism represented by high-Mg cumulitic rocks, and nepheline-normative ankaramites, absarokites and shoshonitic (high-alumina) basalts. The cumulitic rocks consist of phenocrysts of clinopyroxene and olivine ) with inclusions of spinel (Cr#75-78). Olivine high-Fo cores and clinopyroxene host glassy melt inclusions which have nephelinenormative compositions with ankaramitic CaO/Al 2 O 3 ratios (N 1), low SiO 2 (47.4-50.0 wt.%), high MgO (7.5-10.8 wt.%), high total alkalis and shoshonitic K 2 O/Na 2 O ratios (N1). Electron microprobe and LA-ICPMS analyses demonstrate that parental magma was a high-Ca primitive mantle melt. Melt inclusions from the less Fo 85 rim approach absarokite composition with CaO/Al 2 O 3 ratios b 1, lower MgO (5.2 wt.%), and higher total alkalis and K 2 O/Na 2 O ratio. The ankaramitic rocks are strongly porphyritic, composed of phenocrysts of altered olivine with spinel inclusions and large clinopyroxene. Their major and trace element compositions are similar to those of melt inclusions hosted in the high-Fo 91-90 cores and clinopyroxene of the cumulitic rock. The absarokites differ from the high-K ankaramites by slightly higher SiO 2 (50.6-52.7 wt.%), Al 2 O 3 and alkali-oxide contents, lower FeO and MgO and particularly low CaO/Al 2 O 3 (0.6-0.9) ratio. Compared to the absarokites, shoshonitic basalts have similar SiO 2 (50.2-52.8 wt.%) at lower MgO contents and CaO/Al 2 O 3 ratios (0.37-0.53). The presented extensive set of major and trace element data on melt inclusions and whole rocks, along with their main phenocryst compositions, is used to constrain the crystallization temperatures and pressures of the most primitive ankaramites. We suggest that ankaramite compositions are formed by melting of a garnet-free metasomatized mantle source rather than by melting of lower crustal cumulates. Numerical modelling demonstrates that the generation of absarokites and shoshonitic basalts is compatible with fractionation of olivine and clinopyroxene from ankaramitic magma. The high-Mg chemistry of cumulitic rocks is explained as the result of accumulation of these minerals.

The 2011 eruption of Nabro volcano, Eritrea, produced one of the largest volcanic sulphur inputs to the atmosphere since the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, yet has received comparatively little scientific attention. Nabro forms part of an off-axis alignment, broadly perpendicular to the Afar Rift, and has a history of large-magnitude explosive silicic eruptions, as well as smaller more mafic ones. Here, we present and analyse extensive petrological data obtained from samples of trachybasaltic tephra erupted during the 2011 eruption to assess the pre-eruptive magma storage system and explain the large sulphur emission. We show that the eruption involved two texturally distinct batches of magma, one of which was more primitive and richer in sulphur than the other, which was higher in water (up to 2.5 wt%). Modelling of the degassing and crystallisation histories demonstrates that the more primitive magma rose rapidly from depth and experienced degassing crystallisation, while the other experienced isobaric cooling in the crust at around 5 km depth. Interaction between the two batches occurred shortly before the eruption. The eruption itself was likely triggered by recharge-induced destabilisation of vertically extensive mush zone under the volcano. This could potentially account for the large volume of sulphur released. Some of the melt inclusions are volatile undersaturated, and suggest that the original water content of the magma was around 1.3 wt%, which is relatively high for an intraplate setting, but consistent with seismic studies of the Afar plume. This eruption was smaller than some geological eruptions at Nabro, but provides important insights into the plumbing systems and dynamics of off-axis volcanoes in Afar.

Postcollisional mafic igneous rocks commonly exhibit petrological and geochemical heterogeneities, but their origin still remains enigmatic. While source mixing is substantial due to the crustmantle interaction during continental collision, magma mixing is also significant during postcollisional magmatism. The two processes are illustrated by Early Cretaceous mafic igneous rocks in the Dabie orogen. These mafic rocks show arc-like trace element distribution patterns and enriched Sr-Nd-Pb isotope compositions, indicating their origination from enriched mantle sources. They have variable whole-rock e Nd (t) values of 217.6 to 25.2 and zircon e Hf (t) values of 229.0 to 27.7, pointing to source heterogeneities. Such whole-rock geochemical features are interpreted by the source mixing through melt-peridotite reaction in the continental subduction channel. Clinopyroxene and plagioclase megacrystals show complex textural and compositional variations, recording three stages of mineral crystallization during magma evolution. Cpx-1 core has low Cr and Ni but high Ba, Rb and K, indicating its crystallization from a mafic melt (Melt 1) derived from partial melting of hydrous peridotite rich in phlogopite. Cpx-1 mantle and Cpx-2 exhibit significantly high Cr, Ni and Al 2 O 3 but low Rb and Ba, suggesting their crystallization from pyroxenite-derived mafic melt (Melt 2). Whole-rock initial 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios of gabbro lies between those of Pl-1core (crystallized from Melt 1) and Pl-1 mantle and Pl-2 core (crystallized from Melt 2), providing isotopic evidence for magma mixing between Melt 1 and Melt 2. Taken together, a heterogeneously enriched mantle source would be generated by the source mixing due to reaction of the overlying subcontinental lithospheric mantle wedge peridotite with felsic melts derived from partial melting of different rocks of the deeply subducted continental crust during the continental collision. The magma mixing would occur between mafic melts that were derived from partial melting of the heterogeneously metasomatic mantle domains in the postcollisional stage. As a consequence, the source and magma mixing processes in the continental subduction factory are responsible for the significant variations in the whole-rock and mineral geochemistries of postcollisional mafic igneous rocks.
