Abstract: We report the occurrence of Trimeresurus uetzi in Mizoram, northeastern India, which was recently described from Myanmar. We established the identity of the specimen based on morphological characters according to the original description of the species. This report represents a new country record of the species from India as well as a range extension of the species northwestward from the known records in Myanmar.

This paper reviews studies of the snakes of northeastern India published between 2001 and 2024 identified from searchable databases, covering diversity, range extension, distribution records, new genus, new species, redescription, rediscovery, and taxonomic revision. This analysis of the literature and publicly available information presents an updated checklist of 126 snake species representing 12 families and 46 genera, along with their distribution across states in northeastern India and their IUCN Red List status. The study also reveals a research gap in some northeastern states that provides opportunities for further regional studies.

We report Bungarus suzhenae Chen, Shi, Vogel, Ding & Shi, 2021 and Ovophis zayuensis (Jiang, 1977) for the first time from India. Specimens of B. suzhenae and O. zayuensis were collected during our field surveys in north (Arunachal Pradesh) and south (Nagaland-Manipur border) of the river Brahmaputra. Species identity was supported by partial cytochrome b (cyt b), and 16s mitochondrial gene. We provide a detailed morphological description and a key to the two genera of this region. This report extends the westernmost distribution of B. suzhenae by ca. 300 km from Myanmar, and the southernmost range of O. zayuensis by 170 km from Tibet. Until now eight species of Bungarus and only one Ovophis species have been reported from India. Ovophis species are recently reported to be medically important venomous snakes whose venom properties have not been investigated in depth.

The pitviper species Trimeresurus caudornatus was recently described based on only two specimens from Nabang Town, Yingjiang County, Yunnan Province, China. Here, we provide additional data on this species based on a re-examination of 19 preserved specimens, 16 specimens reported in earlier literature sources, and additional photo-documented records from northern Myanmar (Burma) and adjacent China. All new specimens were previously identified as Trimeresurus albolabris sensu lato or Trimeresurus septentrionalis sensu lato. Molecular analyses based on mitochondrial DNA supported the morphological findings in establishing conspecificity with T. caudornatus. The newly identified specimens have a pairwise distance of only 0.4–2.6% from those of the type series of T. caudornatus (based on the cytochrome b gene). Based on these findings, we confirm the presence of T. caudornatus from Myanmar and update its diagnostic characters and distribution. We suggest the species should be considered as Least Concern (LC) following the IUCN’s Red List categories. Further studies reassessing the populations of the Trimeresurus albolabris complex are required.
