The macrocyclic alkadiynes 1,7-cyclododecadiyne, 1,7-cyclotridecadiyne, 1,7-and 1,8-cyclotetradecadiyne, and 1,8-cyclopentadecadiyne react with C5H5Co(CO)2 or, in some cases, C6H5Co(l ,5-C8Hi2) in boiling octane or cyclooctane to give yellow to orange volatile compounds of the composition C5H5Co(alkadiyne) in which the macrocyclic alkadiyne has undergone an intramolecular transannular cyclization to form a tricyclic cyclobutadiene derivative. The reaction of 1,8-cyclotetradecadiyne with C5H5Co(CO)2 also gives the black trimetallic derivative (C6H5)aCo3(CO)(Ci4H2o). The infrared, proton nmr, and mass spectra of these new cyclopentadienylcobalt derivatives are discussed. Since 1958 extensive studies have been carried out on (5) H.
