New daily persistent headache: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Objective To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the epidemiology, precipitants, phenotype, comorbidities, pathophysiology, treatment, and prognosis of primary new daily persistent headache. Methods We searched PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane, and clinicaltrials.gov until 31 December 2022. We included original research studies with any design with at least five participants with new daily persistent headache. We assessed risk of bias using National Institutes of Health Quality Assessment Tools. W… Show more

“…The characteristics of this large group of patients with NDPH are similar to those found in a recent meta-analysis of primary NDPH, and therefore it is likely to be a representative sample [ 4 ]. We confirm that NDPH is precipitated in approximately 40% of cases, most commonly following a flu-like viral illness, but also from a variety of other newly described events (see Table 2 ).…”

“…Despite the different tempo of onset, NDPH is often described in the literature as having a clinical phenotype resembling either CM or CTTH [ 4 , 5 ]. The pathophysiology of NDPH is poorly understood but some authors have argued that the similarity in phenotype suggests that primary NDPH is simply de-novo CM or CTTH [ 6 ].…”

“…NDPH, in itself, is a rare disease, and the post-covid-NDPH phenotype is untouched. A recent review by Cheema et al also conducted a systematic review of the main NDPH epidemiology, precipitants, phenotype, comorbidities, pathogenesis, therapy, and prognosis ( 12 ). An Italian multicentric case series to describe the characteristics of patients with NDPH following COVID infection has been recently conducted.…”

“…The appearance of NDPH may vary by nation or location for biological or cultural reasons. The same patient may be included or excluded from the diagnosis depending on which criteria were used in the research due to the shifting diagnostic criteria for NDPH ( 12 ). Although NDPH affects people of various ages, the majority of case studies featured individuals with a mean age between the twenties and the forties.…”

“…Headaches, including migraine, tension-type headaches, and cluster headaches, are among the most prevalent neurological disorders associated with pain sensation, and significantly diminish patients' quality of life ( 1 ). Approximately 52% of the global population experience a headache disorder annually ( 2 ). Factors such as family history, smoking, alcohol consumption, male predominance, and head trauma are known to predict the occurrence of headaches ( 3 ).…”
