“…With decreasing water concentrations the shift becomes slightly negative from 3570 to 3560 cm À1 for a H 2 O T content varying from 0.8 to 0.4 wt% in the basaltic Et glasses. Larger negative shifts and evolution from uni-to poly-modality of the H 2 O T band were already reported for water-poor (<0.9 wt%) phonolites (Di Muro et al, 2006a) and rhyolites (Arias et al, 2006). In the present study, the occurrence of polymodality with decreasing H 2 O T content has not been observed in the mafic glasses and the H 2 O T band always defines one asymmetric band.…”

“…In an extensive study of geological samples by destructive XRF, Francaviglia (1984Francaviglia ( , 1988 demonstrated that major element contents could also contribute to obsidian sourcing in the western Mediterranean; this was confirmed later on by the electron microprobe-wave dispersion spectrometry (EMP-WDS) investigations of Tykot (1997), essentially centered on the distinction between the four main Monte Arci (Sardinian) obsidian groups. It was then shown that although chemical analyses by scanning electron microscopy in energy dispersive spectroscopy mode (SEM-EDS) give access to only seven major elements' contents (Acquafredda et al, 1999) against 11 major and minor elements for EMP-WDS (Tykot, 1997), they however allowed the distinction of the four western Mediterranean island-sources, of the two principal Pantellerian obsidian types and, like fission-track analysis (Bigazzi et al, 2005;Arias et al, 2006), of only two Sardinian types (Acquafredda et al, 1999).…”
