New data on the composition of metacinnabar and Hg-sphalerite with an isomorphous Cd admixture

Abstract: The data on the composition of metacinnabar and Hg-sphalerite with an isomorphous Cd admixture from some mercury and complex ore objects are summarized. There are two varieties of metacinnabar: (1) cadmium-rich (9.25–15.80 wt.%), with the minimum quantity of Zn admixture (0.67–3.94 wt.%), which has the idealized formula (Hg,Cd,Zn)S (Ulandu) and (2) with increased amounts of Zn (2.21–10.83 wt.%) and Cd (6.00–14.10 wt.%), having the formula (Hg,Zn,Cd)S (Arzak, Kadyrel’, Murzinskoe, Ravnou-1, Ravnou-2). The maxim… Show more

“…Cadmium is suggested to conduct an isovalent substitution as Cd 2+ → Zn 2+ , or coupled with Fe as (Fe 2+ , Cd 2+ ) → Zn 2+ (Belissont et al, 2014; Cook et al, 2009; Vasil Ev, 2011). We would like to emphasize phenomena of the positive correlation between Cd and Zn (Figure 8f) and, the negative correlations between Cd and Fe, Cd and Mn (Figures 8e and 11f,g) in sphalerite from the Wunuer deposit, which were also reported in a great many of deposits (Belissont et al, 2014; Liu, Ye, Zhou, & Wang, 2010; Murakami & Ishihara, 2013; Ye et al, 2011).…”

“…In the Hg-Se-S series, Hg has a stable number of atoms and it shows continuous isomorphic substitution between Se and S, forming a wide range in selenium metacinnabar-tiemannite series. 15.80 wt %), depending on the temperatures of formation and Cd sources [10]. The EPMA data show that the Cd contents of sphalerite I (0.42-1.44 wt % Cd) and sphalerite II (0.26-1.25 wt % Cd) in the Chashula deposit are higher than sphalerite I (0.00-0.09 wt % Cd) in the Dongping deposit.…”

“…Impurities within the bulk are another factor that may have a significant impact on the stacking order of the ZnS layers. It was assumed in the past that under normal conditions another ZnS polymorph (matraite) could form in addition to sphalerite and wurtzite [13]. Currently, the matraite is identified as (111)-twined sphalerite [14], which twinning is likely forced by the admixtures of Fe, Mn, Cu, and In -the elements proned to accumulation in (111) plane of growing sphalerite.…”
