New designs of magnetic fluid exclusion seals for rolling bearings

Abstract: Purpose -To present some new designs of magnetic fluid exclusion seals for rolling bearings and possibility to use them in modern industrial sealing applications. Design/methodology/approach -In the paper is given principle of magnetic fluid sealing technology and are presented new designs of magnetic fluid exclusion seals for rolling bearings, such as compact magnetic fluid seals, two-stages seals being combination of magnetic fluid seal and labyrinth seal or radial lip seal, magnetic fluid seals with "floati… Show more

“…4,8 The existence of field-dependent solid friction has been proposed as the mechanism responsible for this interesting behavior. 9,10 Unfortunately, the fibers used in these previous works are too large (lengths in the 5-100 mm range) for applications where abrasion is an important problem, 11 or thermal instability could be a limiting factor, 1 or there are narrow flow channels. 2,11 Recently, a high yield chemical method for the synthesis of ferromagnetic fibers with a mean diameter of 8 nm and lengths in the 100-500 nm range was reported.…”

“…4 Ferrofluids can also be used in sealing technology. 5 Magnetic fluid seals belong to the class of noncontact technical seals. The principle of operation for such seals is based on the formation of a tight barrier by a ferrofluid, which is kept on the sealing stage by a magnetic field.…”

“…Ochoński performed lots of research work on the design of FFs lubricated bearings including some new designs of FFs exclusion seals for rolling bearings and sliding bearings lubrication . The main advantages of these bearings over conventional bearings were introduced, such as extremely low non‐repetitive run‐out, good damping and quietness of operation, maintenance free service and high reliability.…”
