New Determinations of the Saturation Magnetization of Nickel and Iron

Abstract: Numerous measurements of saturation magnetization of Fe and Ni are reported. Saturation magnetization is determined by consideration of all contributions in the change of magnetization in high magnetic fields, i.e., internal demagnetizing fields, homogeneous rotations, and paramagnetic terms. The value found for the absolute saturation of iron is σ0,∞ = 221.71±0.08 emu/g, corresponding to M = 2.216 μB, in good agreement with previously accepted values. For Ni, the absolute saturation value obtained is σ0,∞ = 5… Show more

“…From the magnetization angle dependence of the resonance field, we obtained the magnetization amplitude value of m 0 M s ¼ 1.85±0.03 T, which is close to the literature value of 1.7 T for Fe 31 , and we found an in-plane uniaxial anisotropy of m 0 H U ¼ 0.101±0.001 T, which is typical for thin films of Fe grown on GaAs 32 . By solving the LandauLifshitz-Gilbert equation for a small current-induced excitation field, (h x , h y , h z )e jot , V d.c. is found to be comprised of symmetric and antisymmetric Lorentzian functions with coefficients V sym and V asy , respectively.…”

“…For some examples, the saturation magnetization of bulk iron, cobalt, nickel, Fe 3 O 4 and CoFe 2 O 4 are 221.7, 162, 58.6, 92, and 80 emu g -1 , respectively. [60][61][62][63] These values serve as a rough basis to design materials with tailored magnetism.…”

“…Two phases of bcc Fe with lattice constants (moments) of 2.87Å(2.22 µ B ) [25,26] and 2.83Å(2.21 µ B ), respectively, were investigated, yielding identical topologies. The total charge density topology is prototypical bcc, as can be seen in Fig.…”
