New developments in electropalatography: A state-of-the-art report

Abstract: Recent developments in Electropalatography (EPG) as a technique for investigating spatio-temporal details of tongue contacts with the hard palate in both normal and pathological speech are reviewed. Details of hardware and software design for the Reading EPG systems are described and illustrated, including a new multichannel data acquisition system developed as part of an IBM-Reading University collaborative research project.

“…After that, the acrylic plate was casted on a study model and a training plate was prepared. Subjects were asked to wear the training plate at least 4 hours a day to allow the subjects to become accustomed to the sensation of an unfamiliar object in the mouth [6]. Recording was conducted in a soundproof room.…”

“…EPG has many advantages which include the ability to provide real-time visual feedback of tongue-palate contacts [1]. EPG helps to overcome speech problem that may arise from defective palate development such those observed in cleft palate subjects [2]- [6].…”

“…Each speaker wore an AKG-C520 head-mounted microphone. Speakers also wore one of two custom-fitted, acrylic, Reading-style electropalates (Hardcastle et al, 1989). Each electropalate has 62 silver electrodes arrayed across eight rows proceeding from front to back; the anterior-most row had six electrodes and the rest had eight.…”

This was contrasted with an electropalate that followed the individual/s actual alveolar shape (Hardcastle et al, 1989). The auditory manipulations in normal speakers involved either delayed auditory feedback or pink masking noise.…”
