New Developments in Space-Charge Beam Physics Research at the University of Maryland Electron Ring (UMER)

Abstract: The University of Maryland electron ring (UMER) is a low-energy, high current recirculator for beam physics research with relevance to any applications that rely on intense beams of high quality. We review the space-charge physics issues, both in transverse and longitudinal beam dynamics, which are currently being addressed with UMER: emittance growth and halo formation, strongly asymmetric beams, Montague resonances, equipartitioning, bunch capture and shaping, etc. Furthermore, we report on recent developmen… Show more

“…For example, many of the important characteristics of the beam transport can currently be measured only by employing the intersecting diagnostics relevant to the first turn alone [1,[10][11][12]. Beam emittance, mismatch, the consequences of skew errors in the magnets, and transport in the beam source and injection region, as well as the characteristics of the injection ''Y'' itself, are suitable for first-turn measurement using intersecting diagnostics such as the insertable phosphor screens.…”

“…The switched injection section that follows consists of two large aperture quadrupoles, a wire-wound injection dipole and two steering elements. A more detailed description of the injector design and the lattice characteristics are available elsewhere [1,4].…”

“…The basic motivation behind University of Maryland Electron Ring (UMER) [1,2,3,4] is to study space-charge phenomena of intense beams. The University of Maryland Electron Ring (UMER) is a scaled model to investigate the physics of intense beams.…”
