New Dietary Supplements from Medicinal Mushrooms: Dr Myko San—A Registration Report

Abstract: In December 2010 the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Republic of Croatia registered tablet preparations AGARIKON. 1 and MYKOPROTECT. 1, developed by Dr Myko San-Health From Mushrooms Co., as dietary supplements. This may be the first time for a European manufacturer to successfully register its own medicinal mushroom products in a European country. As a product with a very broad spectrum of action, officially described as a preparation for immunity strengthening and general health improvement, AGA… Show more

“…However, attempts to register mushroom preparations as dietary supplements in Western countries have been almost completely denied. 33 Although cancer therapies (such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy) can inhibit tumor growth and prolong patients' life span to some extent, they usually compromise the immune system (often already damaged by the cancer), induce free radical production, and damage genetic material of healthy cells. Supportive biotherapy, including the use of effective mushroom extracts, is gaining attention since it reduces side effects and helps overcome cancer growth.…”

“…Cell, animal, and human studies indicate that blended (combination of extracts from three different mushrooms) extracts exhibit significantly stronger cytotoxic effects on human tumor cell lines than single extracts [ 192 , 193 ].…”

“…Medicinal mushroom extract mixture Agarikon.1 (LOT:1100517) was provided by Dr Myko San – Health from Mushrooms Co, Croatia. This preparation has been registered by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Republic of Croatia as a dietary supplement (registration number MZ 0813411210) ( Jakopovich, 2011 ). It is produced from a hot water extract which is precipitated with ethanol and subsequently freeze-dried.…”

“…Although there have been many studies in which various medicinal mushroom species have been proven to possess antitumor effects mediated by tumor signalling perturbations and/or by activation of host antitumor immunity, large scale proteomic studies of their anticancer mechanisms as well the effects on various CRC biomarkers used in the clinic have not been performed. This applies particularly to blended mushroom extracts, hypothesized to bear potentially superior biological properties in comparison to simple extracts ( Shamtsyan et al, 2004 ; Jakopovich, 2011 ). Moreover, there is a lack of data addressing anticancer effects of standardized medicinal mushroom blended extracts alone or in combination with standard chemotherapy at the proteome level.…”
