New Directions for Urban Economic Models of Land Use Change: Incorporating Spatial Dynamics and Heterogeneity

Abstract: We review the usefulness of urban spatial economic models of land use change for the study and policy analysis of spatial land use-environment interactions. We find that meaningful progress has been made in econometric and monocentric models extended to account for multiple sources of spatial heterogeneity and in the development of general equilibrium models with spatial dynamics. Despite these advances, more work is needed in developing models with greater realism. Most agent-based computational models of urb… Show more

“…Las simulaciones pueden suministrar una poderosa metáfora para tales investigaciones teóricas". bio del suelo; Irwin (2010) ha observado al respecto que una tercera parte de los 100 artículos más relevantes en esta área desde 2003 modelan conforme a esta perspectiva, y la situación no parece muy distinta en los últimos desarrollos modelísticos que se han elaborado en el campo del desarrollo regional (véase la Introducción, en Capello y Nijkamp, 2009).…”

“…Adoption of approaches like ABM among economists remains small relative to more accepted economic modeling frameworks because they typically require a more simplistic representation of economic decision-making. However, they are becoming more common as recognition of the importance of spatial interactions has grown (Irwin 2010).…”

“…The critical connection in this approach is a linkage between the change process and the observed spatial pattern. Parcel-level data are used to provide this linkage in land change science (Irwin, 2010) since the scale of the decision-maker (e.g., developing a parcel of land) is the same unit that generates the observed pattern. Since our focus is on correlates to accessibility, which involves the spatial distributions of both homes and business establishments, we sidestep an explicit simultaneous model of the two.…”
