Little is known about the long-term Quaternary climate evolution of central and southeast Europe, because suitable terrestrial paleoenvironmental records are scarce. We present a multiproxy record of loess paleosol sequences in the Middle and Lower Danube Basins over the past 700 k.y. In these lowlands, the continentality of interglacial climate progressively increased during the Middle Pleistocene. Corresponding trends are seen in other climate proxies in the same region and in the lowlands of the northern Black Sea, but not, or less clearly, in climate archives from outside these lowlands. We conclude that a small-scale increase in paleoelevation of central European mountain ranges (the Alps, Carpathians, and Dinarides) during the Middle Pleistocene might be the cause of the progressive increase in climate continentality of southeast European lowlands.

Marked by a progressive increase in the amplitude of climate oscillations and a shift towards a quasi-100 kyr frequency, the Early-Middle Pleistocene transition (EMPT), previously known as the Mid-Pleistocene Transition (or Mid-Pleistocene Revolution) (1.4-0.4 Ma), represents a fundamental shift in the Earth's climate state. The physical and biotic responses to this transition, amplified by the growth of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets, have been profound. Two important paleomagnetic episodes characterize the EMPT, the Jaramillo Subchron (1.07-0.99 Ma) and the Matuyama-Brunhes Chron boundary (~773 ka). The latter has been chosen as the primary guide for the Lower-Middle Pleistocene Subseries boundary, as it lies at the approximate midpoint of the EMPT and aids in global recognition both in marine and terrestrial deposits. The Jaramillo Subchron has received less attention, but the late Early Pliocene is important in Europe because it saw the progressive transition from the Villafranchian to Galerian mammal faunas, and expansion of hominins into western and northern Europe. The Jaramillo Subchron is represented by Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 31 to 28, with MIS 30 already showing the asymmetrical (saw-tooth) pattern characteristic of the Middle Pleistocene. Indeed, while variation in the 40-kyr band (obliquity) remains strong throughout the EMPT, low frequency variability begins at around 1250-1200 kyr, which coincides with a progressive increase in global ice volume. The early phase of the EMPT is characterized by important glaciations beginning with MIS 36 and continuing to MIS 22, a major intensification of the East Asian monsoon system, intensification of loess deposition in northern Europe, development of open landscapes in western Siberia, increased fluvial incision, higher amplitude sea-level change, and spread of large mammals across northern Eurasia, and a strong reduction in the North Atlantic thermohaline circulation. In Europe, the loss of thermophilous plant taxa during the EMPT and indeed throughout the Quaternary is a reminder of the progressive cooling that took place in this region.

The Carpathian region is recognized as one of the most important hotspots for aquatic biodiversity in Europe. In the present study, 658-bp long nucleotide sequences from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) gene were used to study the phylogeographical patterns of the Carpathian endemic dipteran species belonging to the Pedicia staryi group. Molecular data support the taxon status of the allopatric sibling pairs of the morphologically highly similar Pedicia apusenica, Pedicia staryi, and Pedicia lobifera. This pattern is most likely the result of long-term isolation in so-called cumulative microrefugia in the Carpathians, caused by aridification and forest fragmentation in the Miocene-Pliocene period, in combination with the specific habitat requirements of these species (i.e. the wet and humid environments of forested headwater springs). Furthermore, molecular data reveal an important cryptic diversity in the case of the most wide-spread Carpathian P. staryi, as represented by highly divergent, allopatric populations from distant mountainous ranges, already recognized as important centres of endemism for aquatic insects. In addition, an unexpectedly high genetic diversity was identified in populations from the Rodnei Mountains, where the northern and southern slopes harbour highly divergent genetic lineages. This highlights the importance of this mountain range in the preservation of autochthonous diversity in the Carpathians. The present study provides important new evidence regarding the persistence of relic species in spring habitats in the Carpathians, with ancient divergence events that predate Quaternary glaciations and confirm their continuous presence during the Last Glacial Maximum in multiple isolated refugia, leading finally to a high genetic complexity in these particular aquatic ecosystems.
