BackgroundThe Portable Document Format (PDF) is the standard file format for the communication of biomedical information via the internet and for electronic scholarly publishing. Although PDF allows for the embedding of three-dimensional (3D) objects and although this technology has great potential for the communication of such data, it is not broadly used by the scientific community or by clinicians.ObjectiveThe objective of this review was to provide an overview of existing publications that apply 3D PDF technology and the protocols and tools for the creation of model files and 3D PDFs for scholarly purposes to demonstrate the possibilities and the ways to use this technology.MethodsA systematic literature review was performed using PubMed and Google Scholar. Articles searched for were in English, peer-reviewed with biomedical reference, published since 2005 in a journal or presented at a conference or scientific meeting. Ineligible articles were removed after screening. The found literature was categorized into articles that (1) applied 3D PDF for visualization, (2) showed ways to use 3D PDF, and (3) provided tools or protocols for the creation of 3D PDFs or necessary models. Finally, the latter category was analyzed in detail to provide an overview of the state of the art.ResultsThe search retrieved a total of 902 items. Screening identified 200 in-scope publications, 13 covering the use of 3D PDF for medical purposes. Only one article described a clinical routine use case; all others were pure research articles. The disciplines that were covered beside medicine were many. In most cases, either animal or human anatomies were visualized. A method, protocol, software, library, or other tool for the creation of 3D PDFs or model files was described in 19 articles. Most of these tools required advanced programming skills and/or the installation of further software packages. Only one software application presented an all-in-one solution with a graphical user interface.ConclusionsThe use of 3D PDF for visualization purposes in clinical communication and in biomedical publications is still not in common use, although both the necessary technique and suitable tools are available, and there are many arguments in favor of this technique. The potential of 3D PDF usage should be disseminated in the clinical and biomedical community. Furthermore, easy-to-use, standalone, and free-of-charge software tools for the creation of 3D PDFs should be developed.

Cadaveric models remain an essential part of medical training across all specialties. Due to their scarcity, high costs, and possible health hazards, there is a need for more accessible and affordable alternatives, especially in low-resource settings. We introduce cost-effective and easily replicable three-dimensional (3D) printed models to help democratize access to hands-on neuroanatomy education.Silicone-based glue is applied on the surface of a 3D-printed or cadaveric bone frame. Using plastiline on a 3 mm 3D acrylonitrile butadiene styrene pen, the desired anatomical structure is printed on the bone frame. A heat gun is used to smoothen the plastic edges. The structure can then be painted according to its appearance in the real anatomy.Using this technique, we successfully generated a variety of anatomical models to study the cerebrovascular anatomy, the course of the cranial nerves in relation to the skull base, and extracranial structures including the spine.Procurement and conservation of cadaveric specimens can be cumbersome. Our model may be an affordable and easily replicable approach to bridging the gap in anatomy education between low-and high-resource facilities.

Background and Aim: The learning environment influences students' motivation, which is a critical factor of academic achievement. A variety of essential elements, including motivation, can influence student success in anatomy lessons. The present study aimed to assess various motivational factors and their effectiveness among anatomy students. Materials and Methods: This questionnaire based cross-sectional study was conducted on 140 students of anatomy in Faculty of Medicine, Gajju Khan Medical College Swabi and Gomal Medical College DI Khan. The motivation factors of anatomy students, various types of motivations, degree of motivation assessment, and improving the motivation by various parameters during their studies were assessed. SPSS version 27 was used for data analysis. Results: Of the total 140 anatomy students, there were 78 (55.7%) male and 62 (44.3%) female. The overall mean age was 22.52±4.68 years with an age range 18 years to 26 years. The overall response rate of the students was 90% (n=126). The distribution of students based on their motivational degree were as follows: 2 (1.4%) <20, 2 (1.4%) 20-40, 18 (12.9%) 40-60, 34 (24.3%) 60-80, and 84 (60%) 80-100. Male students were predominant than females. The motivation degree was 81.67% with no statistical significance between genders. Conclusion: The present study revealed that teachers may definitely target motivation as the most significant aspect to promote learning. A greater knowledge of the drivers and markers of motivation should help enhance medical student teaching to some extent. Keywords: Motivations, Anatomy students, improving learning
