New injection scheme using a pulsed quadrupole magnet in electron storage rings

Abstract: We demonstrated a new injection scheme using a single pulsed quadrupole magnet (PQM) with no pulsed local bump at the Photon Factory Advanced Ring (PF-AR) in High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK). The scheme employs the basic property of a quadrupole magnet, that the field at the center is zero, and nonzero elsewhere. The amplitude of coherent betatron oscillation of the injected beam is effectively reduced by the PQM; then, the injected beam is captured into the ring without largely affecting th… Show more

“…The stored beam passes the center of the PQM where the magnetic field is approximately zero while the injected bunch passes the PQM off center therefore receiving a dipole kick proportional to the offset from the magnetic center. The PQM injection scheme has been successfully designed and commissioned at the Photon Factory Advanced Ring (PF-AR) at KEK [11]. But PMI is not restricted to quadrupoles.…”

“…Intrigued by KEK's pioneering work on pulsed quadrupole (Harada et al, 2007) and pulsed sextupole injection (Takaki et al, 2010), it was recognized that a pulsed multipole had the potential to make top-up injection shots into the MAX IV storage rings transparent to users while allowing for a substantial reduction of complexity. Instead of four dipole kickers and their pulsers, only a single magnet and its pulser were required; the pulsed magnet could be aligned to the stored beam through beam-based measurements.…”

“…the magnetic end of the vertical injection septum, with an injection amplitude and angle ðx inj ,x 0 inj Þ in the horizontal plane defined by the stored beam. The injection invariant A inj of these bunches is then given by [9,10] At this point the dipole kicker kicks the particles by y ki thus reducing the angle…”
