New Insights into Potential Beneficial Effects of Bioactive Compounds of Bee Products in Boosting Immunity to Fight COVID-19 Pandemic: Focus on Zinc and Polyphenols

Abstract: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an epidemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2). Populations at risk as well as those who can develop serious complications are people with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and the elderly. Severe symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection are associated with immune failure and dysfunction. The approach of strengthening immunity may be the right choice in order to save lives. This review aimed to provide an overview of current … Show more

“…71 Generally, the use of natural bioactive compounds (eg, zinc + polyphenols) is subject of current research and might be a promising approach to affect the immune system's response to illness. 72,73 9.3 | Patients on ECMO or cardiac surgery ECMO therapy is proposed to lead to multiple alterations in serum inflammatory markers, as well as in the overall free radical activity, with an associated decreased bioavailability of micronutrient and trace elements. 73,74 Antioxidant supplementation has been proposed to ameliorate this proinflammatory state.…”

“…Regarding zinc, a meta‐analysis ( n = 4 studies) including 761 patients receiving zinc supplementation compared with 712 receiving standard care showed a slight increase in the length of ICU stay and no improvement in the overall survival for the study group, suggesting that there is no evidence to support zinc supplementation in hospitalized patients with COVID‐19 71 . “…[1,2] Bee products are one of these natural products which are among the crucial complementary treatment option. Several studies demonstrate that bee products exhibit antibacterial, [3] antifungal, [4] antiviral, [5] antiprotozoal, [6] anticancer, [7] features thanks to bioactive compounds they contain. [8] Apitherapy is a significant type of complementary treatment using bee products for both the cure and prevention of various diseases involving diabetic foot ulcers, injuries, rhinitis and rheumatoid arthritis since ancient times.…”

“…Thus, the bioactivity of bee bread is significantly higher than bee pollen [9] . These properties enable bee bread to become a functional nutrient [5] . However, there is no sufficient study on the bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds of bee bread in human digestive system.…”

“…Polyphenols of honey and beekeeping products were also studied for their role in strengthening the human immune system, concerning their contribution to the mitigation of COVID symptoms and the reduction of patient recovery periods. Supplementation of honey with standard pharmaceuticals, such as opinavir/ritonavir tablets, arbidol, chloroquine phosphate, hydroxychloroquineoroseltamivir with or without azithromycin, chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine, or oseltamivir corticosteroids showed promising outcomes in various clinical studies [20].…”
