Stratigraphic analysis of cored and geophysically logged boreholes in the Kasterlee-Geel-Retie-Mol-Dessel area of the Belgian Campine has established the presence of two lithostratigraphic units between the classical Diest and Mol Formations, geometrically related to the type Kasterlee Sand occurring west of the Kasterlee village and the study area. A lower ‘clayey Kasterlee’ unit, equivalent to the lithology occurring at the top of the Beerzel and Heist-op-den-Berg hills, systematically occurs to the east of the Kasterlee village. An overlying unit has a pale colour making it lithostratigraphically comparable to Mol Sand although its fine grain size, traces of glauconite and geometrical position have traditionally led stratigraphers to consider it as a lateral variety of the type Kasterlee Sand; it has been named the ‘lower Mol’ or ‘Kasterlee-sensu-Gulinck’ unit in this study. In the present analysis, the greenish glauconitic Kasterlee Sand in its hilly stratotype area evolves eastwards into the lower ‘clayey Kasterlee’ unit and possibly also into an overlying ‘lower Mol’ or ‘Kasterlee-sensu-Gulinck’ unit, although it is equally possible that the latter unit has an erosive contact and therefore is stratigraphically slightly younger than the type Kasterlee Sand west of the Kasterlee village. A lateral extension of this detailed stratigraphic succession into the faulted zone of east Limburg is proposed.

The comprehensive overview of Neogene lithostratigraphy in the eastern Netherlands dates back to the mid-1970s. In the present study, continuous gamma-ray logs and in situ sediment core samples from six boreholes in the area allowed palynological and mollusc analyses and wireline log-based correlation. These investigations were aimed at updating and revising the existing Neogene lithostratigraphy within the Stratigraphic Nomenclature of the Netherlands by integrating litho-, bio-, and sequence-stratigraphic approaches. The analytical results yielded the establishment of new holo- and lectostratotype sections, together with cross-border interregional correlation. The lithostratigraphic revision resulted in the modified definition of the Aalten, Eibergen and Delden members and the definition of two new proposed members: the Dale and Doetinchem members. The Ticheloven bed, removed in earlier studies, is proposed to be reinstated, and the Stemerdink Bed is upgraded in its hierarchical status to the Stemerdink member. All lithostratigraphic units are included in the present Miocene subdivision of the Groote Heide and Diessen formations, which include three recognisable unconformities: the Early-Miocene Unconformity (EMU), Mid-Miocene Unconformity (MMU) and Late-Miocene Unconformity (LMU). The new, revised, reintroduced and existing local lithostratigraphic units and sequences are discussed with their counterparts in the south and southeast of the Netherlands, in Germany and Belgium, and from this a regionally consistent framework has emerged of the regional Neogene lithostratigraphy.

Recently published multidisciplinary studies discussed the glauconiferous sand units of the Berchem and Diest formations in large temporary outcrops near the Antwerp International Airport, east of the City of Antwerp, northern Belgium. At this location, the upper Miocene Diest Formation was subdivided into an upper Deurne Member and a lower, recently introduced, Borsbeek Member. In the current study, Cone Penetration Tests performed near the outcrops were used to geotechnically characterize the exposed units for regional correlations. For the Kiel and Antwerpen members of the middle Miocene Berchem Formation, the geotechnical expressions are nearly identical to those recently described further west in the City of Antwerp area. Contrary to the latter area, however, the upper part of the Antwerpen Member is missing, due to erosion below the Borsbeek Member. This erosion reached up to the level of a regionally occurring, compact shell bed in the middle of the Antwerpen Member, which may have protected the underlying sand from further erosion. Throughout the study area, the Borsbeek and Deurne members each show a consistent geotechnical facies, allowing for them to be distinguished on electric CPTs and thus for more reliable predictions of their areas of occurrence.
