New insights into the lithostratigraphy and paleogeography of the Messinian Kasterlee Formation from the analysis of a temporary outcrop

Abstract: Previous studies have shown that the Kasterlee Formation occurs as far south as the hilltops of Heist-op-den-Berg and Beerzel in the south of the province of Antwerp. In fragmentary outcrops on these hills, a clear threefold subdivision can be recognized. In the current study, a large temporary outcrop on the Heist-op-den-Berg hill was studied, providing a unique view into the small-scale vertical and lateral variations in the Kasterlee Formation. Based on field observations, grain size analyses and mineralogy… Show more

“…The blue line in the logs is the CPT derived k-value considered the most reliable for geological correlation (Schiltz, 2020, this volume). The profile connecting several CPT measurements demonstrates the continuity of the clayey base of the Kasterlee Formation (Kl) occurring at the top of the southern hills (see Fobe, 1995 andVerhaegen et al, 2020) with the 'clayey Kasterlee' unit defined in the ON-borehole area. It also demonstrates the gradual wedging out of the 'lower Mol' or 'Kasterlee-sensu-Gulinck' unit (Ml-l) of the On-borehole area towards the north close to Oevel, compatible with the extension of the Kasterlee Formation on the 1:50 000 geological map sheet 16 Lier (Schiltz et al, 1993b).…”

“…The well-sorted, fine sand without clay fraction, where bioturbation erased any stratification or internal erosion structures, is typical for a lower shoreface depositional setting (see also Gullentops & Huyghebaert, 1999, p. 192) thus signalling the existence of coastal barriers in the formation. The original westward extension of the Kasterlee Formation is unknown due to erosion at the base of the Kattendijk Formation; however, a palaeogeographic configuration was proposed by Verhaegen et al (2014Verhaegen et al ( , 2020.…”

“…There is also evidently a short erosional phase followed by a new transgression between both formations with reworking of Diest Formation sediment at the base of the Kasterlee Formation. Kasterlee Formation itself records the final Miocene regression (as demonstrated by palaeogeographic interpretation of Verhaegen et al (2020).…”

“…Encouraged by recent positive results of research that clarified the previously uncertain and contested stratigraphic succession of the Kasterlee Formation, sandwiched between the Diest and Mol formations in Belgium, the uppermost part of the Dutch Diessen Formation was once again investigated here in order to achieve a higher lithostratigraphic resolution (Louwye et al, 2007; Louwye & Vandenberghe, 2020; Vandenberghe et al, 2020; Verhaegen et al, 2020). Similar lithological observations and trends, such as the higher gamma-ray log values observed at the top of the latter formation, are described below.…”

“…The third category holds the most potential as a dense network of CPTs exists, and their data can be easily harvested from the public DOV-database ('Databank Ondergrond Vlaanderen'; https:// www.dov.vlaanderen.be). In addition, the implementation of CPT data in scientific research on the Belgian Neogene reveals promising results Schiltz, 2020;Verhaegen et al, 2020;Deckers et al, 2021;Deckers & Everaert, 2022).…”
