New insights into virulence mechanisms of rice pathogen Acidovorax avenae subsp. avenae strain RS-1 following exposure to ß-lactam antibiotics

Abstract: Recent research has shown that pathogen virulence can be altered by exposure to antibiotics, even when the growth rate is unaffected. Investigating this phenomenon provides new insights into understanding the virulence mechanisms of bacterial pathogens. This study investigates the phenotypic and transcriptomic responses of the rice pathogenic bacterium Acidovorax avenae subsp. avenae (Aaa) strain RS-1 to ß-lactam antibiotics especially Ampicillin (Amp). Our results indicate that exposure to Amp does not influe… Show more

“…We propose that antibiotics induce the expression and secretion of T6SS and might make the attacker T6SS + strains more aggressive in the competition for growth. A previous report (Li et al, 2016 ) has shown a similar phenomenon in Acidovorax avenae subsp. avenae (Aaa) strain RS-1.…”

“…ClpV (a class of ATPases) is required to disassemble the contracted VipA/VipB sheath (Bönemann et al, 2009 ; Basler and Mekalanos, 2012 ). Two core proteins, Hcp and VgrG, have frequently been used as markers to investigate the T6SS translocation of secreted effectors (Pukatzki et al, 2006 , 2009 ; Li et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Thus, the role of ClpB in bacterial virulence may be at least partially due to the two putative effector proteins. This was justified by previous data, which clearly demonstrated that Hcp and VgrG could influence bacterial growth, motility, biofilm formation and T6SS gene expression in RS‐1 (Li et al ., , ).…”

“…According to previous studies (Li et al, 2014(Li et al, , 2016, the pathogenicity of Aaa RS-1 in rice is highly associated with a functional Type VI secretion system (T6SS), which has been predicted in more than 25% of fully sequenced bacterial genomes (Cascales, 2008;Pukatzki et al, 2009;Miyata et al, 2011;Liu et al, 2012a). In addition, T6SS genes have also been found to be involved in the adaptation of Aaa RS-1 to different environmental stresses such as high salt, low temperature, b-lactam antibiotics, as well as H 2 O 2 and paraquat-induced oxidative stress (Cui et al, 2015;Li et al, 2016).…”
