New Insights into Xanthophylls and Lipidomic Profile Changes Induced by Glucose Supplementation in the Marine Diatom Nitzschia laevis

Abstract: Nitzschia laevis is a candidate microorganism for bioactive compounds (fucoxanthin and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)) production. In this study, the impacts of glucose-induced trophic transition on biomass, photosynthesis, pigments, and lipid profiles were examined. The specific growth rate was increased under glucose addition, achieved at 0.47 day−1 (0.26 ± 0.01 day−1 for the group without glucose in medium). However, the photosynthetic parameters and pigments including chlorophylls, fucoxanthin, and diatoxanth… Show more

“…Twenty micrograms of lyophilized samples were methyl esterized with 1% (v/v) sulfuric acid in methanol and methylbenzene with heptadecanoic acid (C17:0, Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, MO, USA) as the internal standard. Samples were incubated in a 50 • C water bath overnight and analyzed using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) equipped with a DB-WAX column (30 m × 0.25 mm × 0.25 µm) (Agilent, Santa Clara, CA, USA) [47].…”

“…In addition to the genetic makeup of each production strain, the fatty acid chain length and unsaturation are also affected by environmental factors such as temperature 51 and glucose concentration. 52 Generally, mild conditions such as low glucose concentration and temperature contribute to the increase of unsaturation. In this review, we summarize recent progress in fermentation regulation for increased ARA synthesis in Figure 2V−VIII.…”
