New Insights on the Interaction between Thiophene Derivatives and Au Surfaces. The Case of 3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene and the Relevant Polymer

Abstract: The nature of the interface between electrogen-erated poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) and the Au substrateis studied in detail. In particular, the adsorption of the relevantmonomer, namely, 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene, is investigatedand compared with that of other thiophene derivatives. Di!er-ent deposition procedures have been adopted: very thin "lms ofthe thiophene derivatives have been obtained through chemi-sorption processes from vapor and liquid phases, on Au poly-crystalline substrates, Au nanoparticle… Show more

“…This lowerenergy peak originates from sulfur in broken thiophene units as C-S-Cu (thiolate) (the smaller doublet at 161.1 eV (violet curve) likely originates from atomically adsorbed sulfur). 50,52,53 By comparing the evolution of C 1s and S 2p spectra, we observe the complete rupture of the thiophene units between 200 and 300 C. A similar rupture of the thiophene unit in TTA has also been observed on Ni(111) in which case it leads to a cyclization reaction converting the desulfurized TTA into pentacene. 54…”

“…The positions of the PEDOT Raman bands in presence and absence of FeT3ThP were used to verify that incorporation of the porphyrin monomer units into the polymer network occurs via co‐polymerization and not entrapment. Therefore, Raman spectra of EDOT, bi‐EDOT and tri‐EDOT in aqueous environment were simulated by DFT and are shown in the Supporting Information in Figure S3‐2, traces a‐c (for details regarding the simulation see section S3 in the Supporting Information) . Three distinct bands at 1417 cm −1 , 1499 cm −1 and 1587 cm −1 were obtained for mono‐EDOT, which were assigned to the vibrations observed at 1360 cm −1 , 1426 cm −1 and 1489 cm −1 in the experimental spectrum of EDOT in sodium phosphate buffer (Figure S3‐2, trace d, in the Supporting Information).…”
