New melamine–formaldehyde–ketone polymers. V. Coatings from melamine and MEK‐based reactive solvents

Abstract: Preparation and curing conditions of melamine-formaldehyde-butanone coatings are described. The coatings were prepared from melamine solutions in reactive solvents. The latter were obtained from ethyl-methyl ketone and formaldehyde reacted at different molar rations. Most of the coating had good appearance and good resistance against boiling water.

“…Melamine-formaldehyde resin (MF) is a thermosetting resin synthesized by polycondensation reaction of melamine (M) and formaldehyde (F). [1,2] Because of its good mechanical properties and flame retardant properties, it has a wide range of applications in actual production, such as coatings, [3,4] foams, [5][6][7] adhesives, [8,9] flame retardant, [10,11] and molding compounds. [12][13][14][15] As a molding compound, it is usually used to make tableware, electrical enclosure, automotive interior, and so on.…”

“…So far, it has been found that melamine solutions in reactive solvents can be used to obtain solid melamine-formaldehyde-cyclohexanone (Mel-F-CH) materials with increased water-resistance [6], as well as moulding compositions and filled Mel-F-CH plastics [7]. This study presents foamed polyurethane materials from melamineformaldehyde-cyclohexanone resins, i.e.…”

“…The results showed that the UIF resins had good yellowing resistance, UV resistance, and solubility in common organic solvents [11]. A new melamine-formaldehyde-butanone (MFB) resin was prepared by Glowacz-Czerwonka and Kucharski [12], and they found that the coatings with MFB resin had transparent appearance, high hardness, and good resistance against boiling water.…”
