New antimicrobial textile finishes with enhanced action against microbes are needed for improved protection in critical applications, including hospital infection control and biodefense. This study compares fabric treated with a novel quaternary ammonium compound-based antimicrobial treatment with untreated fabric, using a new method for determining the antimicrobial efficacy of fabrics and textiles. The effects of contact temperature, contact time, and bacterial load were demonstrated. The lowest concentrations of bacterial cells were killed very quickly. Increasing contact time resulted in inactivation of larger numbers of cells, as did elevating temperature from 24 °C to 37 °C. Important physical properties of the fabrics were retained. The simplicity, and good reproducibility, of the test procedure supports its use for the rapid screening and assessment of fabric specimens for antimicrobial activity.

In this paper, the antibacterial activity against Bacillus pumilus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa of the wool fabrics treated with new antimicrobial bis-quaternary surfactants, DABK and DABB, is studied. The activity was established on the basis of the agar diffusion and protective antibacterial test results and on the basis of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation. The results were compared with the HTAB, a monoquaternary surfactant of conventional use. The results from the agar diffusion and protective antibacterial tests do not enable us to confirm whether these compounds are potentially useful antimicrobial agents for the protection of textiles. However, SEM observations show clearly the efficacy of these compounds to protect the wool fabrics against the micro-organisms. SEM has been a useful technique for the assessment of antibacterial activity in textiles.

The standardized agar diffusion plate method is modified to incorporate the evaluation of antimicrobial activity of the surface of treated fabrics or any other materials such as leather, paper, and painted disc, etc. The bacterial culture is spread over the surface of the agar and the test sample is placed on the seeded agar surface. This procedure affords a direct contact and interaction of the bacteria with the sample surface. Any antimicrobial activity of the treated surface is indicated by the amount of bacterial growth on the agar in contact with the surface of the test material. This method is simple, effective, and informatory and evaluates both diffusible and nondiffusible antimicrobial agents.
