New Method For Numerical Simulation Of Atmospheric Turbulence

Abstract: A new method is described for the numerical simulation of atmospheric turbulence effects on optical propagation. The method is based on a convolution approach which offers improved mathematical accuracy and convenience for numerical implementation, as compared with the more commonly used Fourier synthesis technique. Random phase screens generated with the new method are shown to have the correct r5/3 dependence for the phase structure function for all separations r within the specified domain of validity.
