New method for the dynamic assessment of anorectal function in constipation

Abstract: A new dynamic technique for the investigation of anorectal function has been developed. This involves radiological visualization of the rectum during voiding of a semisolid radio-opaque contrast medium, and simultaneous measurement of the intrarectal pressure and electrical activity of the external anal sphincter. The method has been used to study patients (n = 16) with profound difficulty passing formed stool. It has demonstrated an abnormal increase in the activity of the puborectalis and superficial and sph… Show more

“…Delayed colonic transit was diagnosed when 20 per cent or more of radio-opaque markers administered remained on a plain abdominal radiograph at 100 h 19,20 . Evacuation proctography was performed predominantly in patients with obstructed defaecation using previously described methods 21 . Proctography was normal when there was no difficulty expelling rectal contents (even in the presence of radiological abnormalities of the rectum that did not constitute a 'physical obstruction' to defaecation), and abnormal when there was significant difficulty in expelling rectal contents.…”

“…Womack et al [48] described a technique which combined simultaneous evacuation proctography, electromyography of the ex ternal sphincter and intrarectal pressure monitoring. This latter technique is of bene fit in researching the condition, but probably does not contribute much extra information that is helpful in the management of the average patient.…”
