“…Elements screened in the leachate included Al, As, Au, B, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Sb, Se, Si, Sr, Ti, U, V, and Zn. DOC was determined using ICP after the removal of inorganic C through acidifying the solution, as described by Stefansson et al [55]. 13 C CP/MAS solid-state NMR Solid state 13 C NMR for woodchips and biochar (raw samples and at sixth month) was done in the Centre for Advanced Imaging, the University of Queensland, using a Bruker Advance 300 high-resolution NMR spectrometer (MA, USA) interfaced to a 7.05 Tesla ULTRA-SHIELD bore magnet system.…”

“…Up-core variations in levels of geochemical elements (Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mn, Na, P and N) were determined using sequential acid digestion, using HF to break down silicates, HNO 3 to oxidise the organic matter, and H 2 O 2 to oxidise the resistant organics (Bock, 1979); concentrations were established using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) (Stefá nsson et al, 2007). Geochemical accumulation rates were also calculated based on the product of chemical concentration (mg g À1 ) and SAR (g cm À2 yr À1 ) data while enrichment factor (EF)s were employed to distinguish between natural and anthropogenic sources of geochemical elements (Binford, 1990).…”

“…Preliminary tests done on CO 2 standards (0, 2.27 and 4.54 mM CO 2 ) at temperatures between 20 and 50°C gave identical results on the carbonation meter (data not shown), but the efficiency of the meter outside that range was not tested. Geothermal water could be passed through an ice-cooled loop of tubing (Stefánsson et al, 2007) prior to injection into the carbonation meter to bring the water sample into a desirable temperature range.…”
