New Neuroprotective Effect of Lemon IntegroPectin on Neuronal Cellular Model

Abstract: Lemon IntegroPectin obtained via hydrodynamic cavitation of organic lemon processing waste in water shows significant neuroprotective activity in vitro, as first reported in this study investigating the effects of both lemon IntegroPectin and commercial citrus pectin on cell viability, cell morphology, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and mitochondria perturbation induced by treatment of neuronal SH-SY5Y human cells with H2O2. Mediated by ROS, including H2O2 and its derivatives, oxidative stress alter… Show more

“…Moreover, the aforementioned silver nanoparticles induced in vitro have a cytotoxic effect in some types of human tumors, including breast and colon cancer [ 106 ]. C. limon pectic polymer derived from the industrial residue of Citrus juice extraction via hydrodynamic cavitation process exerts significant neuroprotective effects against H 2 O 2 -induced damage on SH-SY5Y cells, by preserving cellular viability and morphology as well as limiting reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and related mitochondrial damage [ 108 ].…”

“…Grapefruit IntegroPectin obtained upon freeze-drying is a low-methoxyl citrus pectin (degree of esterification, DE = 14% [23] compared to DE = 69% for commercial citrus pectin [24]), containing also a uniquely high amount of naringin (4 ,5,7-trihydroxyflavonone-7-rhamnoglucoside), approaching 74 mg/g [20], adsorbed at its surface (for comparison, the highest yield values reported for naringin extracted from fresh grapefruit albedo is 10.5 mg/g [25]). Recently, we reported the powerful in vitro mitoprotective and neuroprotective activity of lemon IntegroPectin on neuronal SH-SY5Y human cells treated with concentrated (0.2 M) H 2 O 2 [24]. Hydrogen peroxide is one of the key reactive oxygen species (ROS) involved in the cellular mechanisms leading to neurodegenerative pathologies whose overproduction in neurons leads to the oxidative degradation of neurons, rich in easily oxidized polyunsaturated fatty acids [26].…”

“…Recently, the powerful in vitro mitoprotective and neuroprotective activity of lemon In-tegroPectin on neuronal SH-SY5Y human cells treated with concentrated (0.2 M) aqueous H2O2, a strong oxidizer involved in the cellular mechanisms leading to neurodegenerative pathologies, has been reported [24]. In this study, along with high neuroprotective and antioxidant effect of grapefruit IntegroPectin on the same neuronal model cells, we report the discovery of powerful antiproliferative activity.…”

Indeed, grapefruit IntegroPectin obtained upon freeze-drying is a low-methoxyl citrus pectin (DE = 14% [23] compared to 69% for commercial citrus pectin [24]), containing also a uniquely high amount of naringin (4′,5,7-trihydroxyflavonone-7-rhamnoglucoside), approaching 74 mg/g [20], adsorbed at its surface. For comparison, the highest yield values reported for naringin extracted from fresh grapefruit albedo is 10.5 mg/g [34].…”
