“…Although the neutral SiO molecule has been identified in maser or thermal emission &om nearly 200 circumstellar sources [11], no direct detection of Sio+ has been reported. Lovas [12] did consider it as a possible source of the unidentified U86.2 radio line; however, in a recent fast-ion-beam laser spectroscopy study [13] we showed definitively that it could not be the source and we provided a set of precise molecular constants to facilitate optical and radio-&equency searches.…”

“…The ion accelerator and laser beam source for this experiment were similar to those used in previous spectroscopic measurements and have been described in more detail before [13,19]. The ions were produced in a hightemperature hollow cathode ion source using SiO powder as the source feed for beams of SiO+ and nitrogen gas for N2 + beams.…”

“…For the simplest implementation of broadband laser rotational cooling, near diagonal FCFs are important so that vibrational excitation is not likely to occur during the cooling process, although in some cases it should also be possible to re-pump vibrational excitations 15,18 [19][20][21][22][23] . In addition to electronic spectroscopy 19,20,22,24 , magnetic dipole allowed transitions between fine structure components of numerous rotational levels in the X 2  + (v=0) state were also measured by Rosner's group using a separated field optical pump/probes rf-double resonance technique 21 .…”

“…We find that 29 Si 16 O + is best described with Hund's case (b) βS coupling scheme as the hyperfine interaction exceeds the spin-rotation coupling. We also report spectroscopy of the (0,0) and (1,0) bands of B 2 Σ + ← X 2 Σ + of 28 Si 16 O + and find spin-rotation constants for both the X 2 Σ + and B 2 Σ + states that in some casese are incompatible with previously recommended values [34,35,36,37].…”

“…Using the vacuum UV photoelectron spectrosocpy of SiO (X 1 Σ + ), Colbourn and coworkers [44] have estimated the spectroscopic constants for three ionic states of 28 Si 16 O + : X 2 Σ + , A 2 Π, and B 2 Σ + . Later, Rosner and coworkers [35,36,37,45] measured a number of high-resolution bands of A 2 Π − X 2 Σ + and B 2 Σ + − X 2 Σ + transitions of 28 Si 16 O + from LIF studies of mass-selected fast ion beams. By fitting the entire data with a Hamiltonian model, they have obtained more precise rotational and fine-structure constants for all three states.…”
