“…A randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial demonstrated a significantly reduced recurrence rate following twice daily oral acyclovir during a 1-year observation period [11]; long-term acyclovir therapy is known to significantly improve graft outcomes [27] and prevent viral recurrences [29]. Early diagnosis of HSV keratitis is also important in corneal allograft recipients, and HSV keratitis has been described in patients with no history of herpes disease [4,23]. For these reasons, a clear diagnosis is mandatory in patients with suspected herpes keratitis undergoing penetrating keratoplasty or recurrent keratitis.…”

“…Whether newly acquired or reactivated, published reports have described dendritic keratitis after penetrating keratoplasty (PK) [1][2][3][4] and reactivated HSV after laser-assisted keratomileusis. [5][6][7][8] Herpetic keratitis after cataract surgery, however, is a much less reported event.…”

“…A total of 5 cases have been reported, including 1 case of an eye with previous PK for keratoconus. 4,9,10 All the cases denied prior herpetic disease, underwent uncomplicated cataract surgery, and were managed for herpetic epithelial keratitis, with earliest presentation noted at postoperative day 10. We report a unique case of new-onset, culture-proven HSV keratitis occurring on postoperative day 5 after uncomplicated cataract extraction.…”

“…Surgical trauma is one of the various stimulants that can reactivate the virus and cause infection in a case with no previous history of herpetic eye disease. There are a few reports of new onset of herpetic keratitis after penetrating keratoplasty (Mannis et al 1991;Remeijer et al 1997;Borderie et al 2004;Rezende et al 2004), laserassisted keratomileusis (Davidorf 1998;Perry et al 2002;Levy et al 2005) and cataract surgery (Miyajima et al 2003;Barequet & Wasserzug 2007). We present five cases of new-onset HSV infection after ocular surgery that had an unusual clinical presentation.…”
