New Perspectives for Staging and Prognosis in Soft Tissue Sarcoma

Abstract: Tumor size and grade in the AJCC STS staging system need revision; moreover, primary site, histologic subtype, margin status, and recurrence offer additional relevant prognostic insight. Incorporation of these factors may enhance the AJCC staging system, thereby further facilitating individualized therapeutic strategies for STS patients.

“…To assess the impact of both SNPs on patient outcomes, Cox multivariate regression analysis was performed, adjusting for known prognostic factors of STS: tumor stage, resection type (R-status), and gender (20,21). Interestingly, the sarcoma patients harboring the alleles of the YWHAQ and CD44 SNPs, which in the NCI60 analysis were associated with weaker growth responses to chemotherapeutics, associated with poorer overall survival.…”

“…El abordaje de este tipo de tumores implica la necesidad de un estudio completo para definir la etiología del mismo (Lahat et al 2008). En el caso que se reporta, la presentación clínica insidiosa se asocia a la dificultad diagnóstica inherente; pocos fueron los síntomas relacionados con el efecto de masa que provocó el tumor en la paciente, se trató en sí de un hallazgo incidental.…”

“…Biomarkers which can predict the high-risk patients are very important, because such biomarkers may be a useful indicator for determining whether adjuvant therapeutic modalities such as irradiation and chemotherapy should be performed. In MFH, the tumor size, tumor location, microscopic tumor necrosis and histologic grade have been shown to be important prognostic factors (27,30,35,36). Some of these factors are incorporated into staging systems that form the basis for decision making regarding adjuvant therapy and follow-up.…”
