New Plasmodium vivax Genomes From the China-Myanmar Border

Abstract: Plasmodium vivax is increasingly the dominant species of malaria in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), which is pursuing regional malaria elimination. P. vivax lineages in the GMS are poorly characterized. Currently, P. vivax reference genomes are scarce due to difficulties in culturing the parasite and lack of high-quality samples. In addition, P. vivax is incredibly diverse, necessitating the procurement of reference genomes from different geographical regions. Here we present four new P. vivax draft genome… Show more

“…To expand our dataset, we searched available genome assemblies for antigen sequences. 4 published draft genomes had corresponding genes extracted and 19 genome assemblies which had been created as described in [40] up through correction were searched via blast for similarity to PVP01_0938800, PVP01_0948400, PVP01_1212300, and PVP01_1427900. Other published genomes including PvC01, PvT01, PvW1, PvCMB-1, and Pv_N_Korean_v1 were obtained from respective repositories and similarly BLAST searched [41][42][43].…”

“…Plasmodium vivax and P. knowlesi genome sequences were published in 2008 [ 429 , 430 ], followed by additional P. vivax [ 431 433 ] and P. knowlesi [ 434 437 ] genome sequences including the use of advanced technologies and clinical isolates. Plasmodium vivax transcriptomes have since become available representing sporozoites [ 438 , 439 ], specific liver-stage forms including hypnozoites [ 212 , 213 ] and blood-stage forms [ 440 448 ], and proteomes have been developed representing stage-specific blood stages and clinical biomarkers [ 449 454 ].…”

“… 55 In Eastern GMS, where P. vivax populations are less geographically isolated and genetically distinct, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and the derived SNP barcode may be necessary to distinguish closely related parasite strains and identify the origins of the parasite. 56 , 57 The genomic information from spatially representative parasite populations would identify potential migration patterns using shared identity-by-descent segments, 56 , 58 providing the scientific basis for enhanced monitoring of parasite introduction by migrant populations.…”
