New polyunsaturated fatty acid amides isolated from the seeds of Zanthoxylum piperitum

Abstract: Five linear fatty acid amides (1-5) of the sandshool class, including two new compounds, were isolated from Zanthoxylum piperitum seeds. Based on combined spectral analyses, the structures of new compounds 4 and 5 were determined to be 2',3'-dihydroxy-alpha-sanshool and 2',3'-dihydroxy-beta-sanshool, respectively. These compounds exhibited weak cytotoxicity in the A-549 (human lung cancer) cell line.

“…Other compounds were isolated from species of Zanthoxylum including the pyranocoumarin avicennol and alkylamides, such as the sanshools (Jang et al, 2008;Soriano-Agatόn et al, 2005;Xiong et al, 1997;Yang, 2008). To date, there is a paucity of research on the biological activity of avicennol, which has been previously identified in Z. elephantiasis Macfad (Gray et al, 1977).…”

“…Dependent on their double bond configuration, the dodeca-2,6,8,10-tetraenoic acid IBAs are known as a-, b-, and e-sanshools (e.g. 158-160, 162, 163, 175, 176) (Chen et al, 1999;Jang et al, 2008;Kashiwada et al, 1997;Yang, 2008;Yasuda et al, 1982), while the g-sanshools are tetradeca-2,4,8,10,12-pentaenoic acid derivatives (e.g. 161, 164, 172, 174, 315) (Chen et al, 1999;Iseli et al, 2007;Kashiwada et al, 1997;Xiong et al, 1997;Yang, 2008).…”

“…Some sanshool derivates were already described in Zanthoxylum sp., such as Z.anthoxylum piperitum [8] and Z.anthoxylum integrifoliolum [9]. By comparison of our NMR and MS data with literature data, it was identified as hydroxy-γ-isosanshool (l " Fig.…”
