New records and geographical distribution of Alburnus hohenackeri Kessler, 1870 (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) in Iran

Abstract: The distribution of the Persian bleak, Alburnus hohenackeri Kessler, 1870 in Iran is described. During a survey from 2009 to 2012, we captured 30 specimens of A. hohenackeri from Choghakhor Wetland in Tigris River basin and Kardeh Dam in Harirud River basin of Iran. This is the first report of the occurrence of this species in these localities. The main distribution range in Iran is the southern part of the Caspian Sea from where it has been translocated to the other Iranian basins along with exotic Chinese ca… Show more

“…Therefore, it seems that a species can't occupies the large areas with potentially distribution climatic conditions in its life history. In contrast, model output showed suitability habitats for A. hohenackeri only in the Caspian Sea basin but introduced to other basins in Iran (Figure 1), likely the species have been imported from the Caspian Sea basin to other localities with commercial fish species (Zareian et al, 2013). Model outputs obtained from natural distribution of the species indicated that introduced localities have low habitat suitability for the species.…”

“…Zareian et al (2013) argued that Pearl Fish were very likely translocated from its native range in the Caspian basin by yearly restocking of commercial species such as Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Valenciennes, 1844), Hypophthalmichthys nobilis (Richardson, 1844) and Ctenopharyngodon idella (Valenciennes, 1844). It is translocated from the Caspian Sea to many other basins of Iran (Zareian et al 2013;Mehraban et al 2014). This is the first report of occurrence of the genus Alburnus in Hari River itself.…”
