New records of beaked whales (genus Mesoplodon) in southern Spain

Abstract

Here we report the stranding of two occasional species of the genus Mesoplodon not previously recorded on the Andalusian coast. Two Blainville's beaked whale stranded in two different events, one in Matalascañas (Huelva) in 1996 and another in Tarifa (Cádiz) in 2003, and two Sowerby's beaked whale were found stranded together on the coast of Rota (Cádiz) in 2007. These strandings are located near the range boundaries of both species, whose distribution is poorly known. Additionally, three new records of Gervais' beaked whale stranded on the Andalusian coast are presented.

“…Regular sightings of M. bidens off the Azores (MacLeod & Mitchell, 2000; Visser, 2012; Villa, personal communication) along with many strandings (Reiner, 1986; Reiner et al ., 1993; Pereira et al ., 2011; Bachara et al , 2014) and sightings off the Madeira Archipelago (Maul & Sergeant, 1977; Freitas et al , 2012) highlight that these areas may represent the south-eastern parts of its geographic range, with the latter recent live sightings probably related to the increase in local cetological research. Veinticinco años (1986-2011) de monitorización de varamientos de mamíferos marinos en el litoral de Doñana (Huelva, SO España)
