New records of desmids from Ropar wetland (a Ramsar Site) of Punjab, India

Abstract: This study deals with exploration of freshwater desmids for the first time from Ropar wetland (Ramsar site) of Punjab (India) to assess their taxonomic aspects and bio-geographical distribution. During this study, samples of planktonic, epiphytic and epilithic desmids were collected from littoral zone and were observed under light microscope for their morphometric characteristics based identification. “…This review has concentrated on terrestrial algae (algae of soil and subaerial environments), and the literature on algae of the wetland paddy soils is not emphasized. Algae of wetland paddy fields is an already well‐explored theme (Chatterjee et al., 2017; Kaushik et al., 2019; Ramakrishnan et al., 2023; Vijayan & Ray, 2015), and such algae are primarily aquatic (Komal et al., 2021; Vijayan & Ray, 2015).…”

“…Desmids are eukaryotic unicellular creatures belonging to the class Zygnematophyceae of phylum Charophyta under kingdom Plantae (Lewis & McCourt 2004;Komal et al 2021). All desmids consist of two symmetrical 'semi cells' joined by an isthmus and the majority possess beautiful cell-wall ornamentations (Brook 1981).…”
