New records of non-indigenous molluscs from the eastern Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: We report new findings of non-indigenous Indo-Pacific molluscs from shallow water habitats off Israel, Greece and Egypt, eastern Mediterranean Sea. The bivalves Pillucina vietnamica Zorina, 1978 and Alveinus miliaceus (Issel, 1869) were collected from sandy bottoms off Israel, whereas Gregariella cf. ehrenbergi (Issel, 1869) was recovered from a buoy originating from Port Said, Egypt, and stranded on the Israeli coast. The three species are first records for the Mediterranean Sea. Additionally, we report range… Show more

“…Among the NIS, we found Gregariella cf. ehrenbergi (Issel, 1869), a species not previously recorded from the Mediterranean Sea (Steger et al 2018). On the ground at the Herzliya Marina, next to the buoy, we found specimens of the non-indigenous intertidal gastropod Cellana rota (Gmelin, 1791).…”

“…ehrenbergi . This species has a complex taxonomic status and cryptic habitat (Steger et al 2018) which may cause significant time lags in first detection (Crooks 2005; Albano et al 2018). Therefore, we cannot determine whether this is truly a recent arrival, but our study demonstrates that the full consideration of all potential vectors can contribute to NIS detection.…”

“…This name has been used for the first Indo-Pacific triphorid species detected in the Mediterranean Sea, likely introduced through the Suez Canal. Notwithstanding the complexity of the group, the introduced species in the Mediterranean Sea probably best matches Viriola bayani Jousseaume, 1884 (Steger et al 2018). Translation of the Latin text.…”

“…Although some work on native assemblages is available, research has been polarized on the burgeoning number of non-indigenous species, here mostly of Red Sea origin (e.g. Mienis 2010;Albayrak 2011;Crocetta et al 2017;Steger et al 2018). Importantly, no work has been conducted on mesophotic molluscs.…”
