New Records of Termite Hosts for Two Species ofHoplopyga, with Notes on the Life Cycle ofHoplopyga brasiliensis(Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae)

Abstract: We provide the first report of larvae of Hoplopyga brasiliensis (Gory and Percheron) and H. singuhris (Gory and Percheron) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae) in nests of Cornitermes cumulans (Kollar) (Isoptera: Termitidae: Syntermitinae) and Dwersitermes diversimiles (Silvestri) (Isoptera: Termitidae: Nasutitermitinae), respectively. We also provide new information on the life cycle of H. brasiliensis and the feeding behavior of adults of H. singularis. In total, 44 larvae of H. brasiliensis were found in … Show more

“…Immature species of Hoplopyga singularis (Gory and Percheron, 1833) were described after being collected in termite nests (Micó et al 2001). Larvae of Hoplopyga brasiliensis (Gory and Percheron, 1833) were collected from nests of the termite Cornitermes cumulans (Kollar, 1832) and H. singularis (Gory and Percheron, 1833) in nests of the termite Diversitermes diversimiles (Silvestri, 1901), where they fed and completed their biological cycle according to Puker et al (2012). Thus, it appears that the immature Hoplopyga can develop in the nests of termites or in decaying wood.…”
