New records of water mites from Turkey and Iran revealed by DNA barcoding, with the description of a new species (Acari, Hydrachnidia)

Abstract: New records of water mites from Iran and Turkey revealed by DNA barcoding are presented. DNA barcodes were recovered from 44 water mite specimens morphologically assigned to 18 species. The DNA barcoding data for the twelve species were uploaded into the BOLD database. One species of the Hygrobates longiporus-complex, H. thori Pešić & Smit sp. nov. is described as new for science and Hydrodroma persica Pešić & Saboori, 2012 is reported as new for Turkey. We propose to lower the taxonomic status of Hydr… Show more

“…Biesiadka & Kowalik, 1979 Remarks -Mideopsis roztoczensis was originally described by Biesiadka & Kowalik (1979) from Szum River, Biała Łada River, Wieprz River and their tributaries in Roztocze area, east-central Poland. After that, it has been reported from different parts of Europe (Gerecke et al 2016) and Türkiye (Pešić et al 2022a). According to the original description by Biesiadka & Kowalik (1979), Mideopsis roztoczensis in the first line is characterized by a more elevated dorsal shield with distinctly visible anteriorly diverging lines of particularly faint fine porosity (Fig.…”

“…The results of this analysis confirm that S. algeriensis is a distinct species, clearly separable from S. compactilis and S. setiger (with the latter probably being an aggregate of 2 or more species). Furthermore, the high genetic distance of 15.4% between the Spanish material and a specimen from Iran, attributed to S. algeriensis by Pešić et al [ 52 ], suggests that the latter belongs to a further distinct species. It likely represents S. beneckei Bader & Sepasgosarian, 1982, a species proposed to be a synonym of S. algeriensis by Asadi et al [ 53 ].…”

“…A recent study performed by Pešić et al (2022a) showed that populations of H. longiporus Thor, 1898 morphotype in Türkiye also belong to two distinct clades, one comprising specimens from southwestern Türkiye and the Balkan and another comprising specimens from northern Iran and eastern Türkiye, described as H. thori Pešić & Smit, 2022. In this study, we report a new record of this species from the Bulgurcuk stream in Elazig province. In the analysed material H. thori was represented by six barcoded individuals assigned to two BINs, AEL4319 (4 individuals) restricted to Türkiye and AEK7910 (2 specimens) distributed in Türkiye and Iran.…”

“…The final dataset of H. thori includes 13 sequences from Pešić et al . (2022a) and this study; dataset of H. anatolicus includes seven sequences from this study. For H. longipalpis , we used 26 sequences from Pešić et al .…”
