“…The Catoca Mine provides one of the few limiting quantitative age estimates for Early Cretaceous vertebrate fossils in Africa. More broadly, Linol et al (2015) correlate the Kwango Group, in which by extension we would include sediments in the Catoca crater, with the Bauru Group in the Paraná Basin of Brazil, which has produced a number of sauropods and other vertebrate taxa, but only one jaw fragment with a premolar of a small mammal (Candeiro et al, 2006). A larger mammal, Vincelestes, is known from the Early Cretaceous of Argentina.…”

“…Thus, lithostratigraphic units related to the Permian show the record of a warm, shallow sea that was gradually silt up, increasing the influence of freshwater (Rohn 2007). This basin continentalisation followed a worldwide trend of aridity due to the assembly of Pangaea (Linol et al 2015), a good reason to preserve some of the outcrops related to this event.…”

“…Finally, during the Mesozoic, the portion of western Gondwana, where the basin is located, experienced arid climates that completed the tendency to continentalisation, which started in the Permian. The desert climate is characterised by extensive dune fields that at the end of Jurassic alternated with basaltic flows arising from the separation of Africa and South America and the consequent opening of the South Atlantic Ocean, which concludes the sedimentary history of the Paraná Basin (Linol et al 2015). Excellent outcrops recording the events and associated life may be found throughout the interior of São Paulo state.…”

“…A correlação entre as formações Guará e Botucatu com a seção mesozoica da bacia do Congo (Huab, Namíbia), através das formações Stanleyville e Dekese (Linol et al, 2015), sugere que as unidades do Arenito Pedreira podem corresponder ao Krone Member, considerado com base no seu conteúdo fossilífero, como Jurássico Superior (Wanke et al, 2000;Linol et al, 2015).…”
