This article describes a model to assist social workers' assessment of psychosocial impact on clients resulting from participation in various types of religious groups. The model avoids judgmental or ethnocentric assumptions that are hazardous in evaluating religious groups. Rather than evaluating beliefs, the model develops a typology of religious groups based on specific organizational characteristics related to leadership and member recruitment styles. The possible psychosocial impacts on members, resulting from these styles and other organizational culture characteristics, are considered. The model is based upon a value commitment to respect religious diversity while acknowledging the need for assessment guidelines in practice. Resumo O interesse pela possibilidade de reconfigurar a mente humana foi recorrente na história da humanidade, sob diferentes formas aliadas principalmente à religião, à guerra e à política. Somente a partir de 1950, entretanto, é que psicólogos, psiquiatras e outros pesquisadores se dedicaram com maior profundidade ao tema, popularizado pelo termo genérico de lavagem cerebral. O objetivo deste artigo é revisar as bases teórico-conceituais e metodológicas desses esforços, assim como sua manifestação atualizada na psicologia social, quando se busca a modificação de atitudes, crenças e comportamentos. São analisados criticamente os usos da lavagem cerebral para gerar mudanças significativas por técnicas de pressões psicológicas e tortura física, os mitos de sua implementação e sua (ir)reversibilidade.

Over the past two decades American psychiatrists have had to address the emergence of an increasingly fervent religious pluralism. Particularly in cases of socially controversial new religious movements (NRMs), distressed families have pressured psychiatrists to assess the mental state of recruits to such sects, often labeled "cults." At this inevitably acrimonious interface between family values and religious liberties, psychiatrists have for the most part resisted pressures to medicalize religious conversions. This article provides an historical review of American psychiatric response to NRMs with respect to nosology and practice. It introduces this response in the more general context of ethics and the problematics of respect for religious meanings.
