Interstitial light elements play an important role in magnetic materials by improving the magnetic properties through changes of the unit cell volume or through orbital hybridization between the magnetic and interstitial atoms. In this review focusing on the effects of interstitial atoms in Mn-based compounds, which are not well researched, the studies of interstitial atoms in three kinds of magnetic materials (rare-earth Fe-, Mn-, and rare-earth-based compounds) are surveyed. The prominent features of Mn-based compounds are interstitial-atom-induced changes or additional formation of magnetism—either a change from antiferromagnetism (paramagnetism) to ferromagnetism or an additional formation of ferromagnetism. It is noted that in some cases, ferromagnetic coupling can be abruptly caused by a small number of interstitial atoms, which has been overlooked in previous research on rare-earth Fe-based compounds. We also present candidates of Mn compounds, which enable changes of the magnetic state. The Mn-based compounds are particularly important for the easy fabrication of highly functional magnetic devices, as they allow on-demand control of magnetism without causing a large lattice mismatch, among other advantages.

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are broadly explored from the perspective of mechanical, corrosion-resistance, catalytic, structural, superconducting, magnetic properties, and so on. In magnetic HEAs, 3d transition metals or rare-earth elements are well-studied compositional elements. We researched a magnetic HEA containing Fe combined with 4d and 5d transition metals, which has not been well investigated, and found a new dual-phase face-centered-cubic (fcc) HEA FeRhIrPdPt. The structural, magnetic, and transport properties were evaluated by assuming that FeRhIrPdPt is a mixture of FeRh4, FeIr4, FePd4, and FePt4, all with the fcc structure. The dual-phase is composed of a Rh- and Ir-rich main phase and a Pd- and Pt-rich minor one. FeRh4 and FeIr4 show spin freezings at low temperatures, while FePd4 and FePt4 are ferromagnetic. Two magnetic features can characterize FeRhIrPdPt. One is the canonical spin-glass transition at 90 K, and the other is a ferromagnetic correlation that appears below 300 K. The main and minor phases were responsible for the spin-glass transition and the ferromagnetic correlation below 300 K, respectively.

High-entropy alloys are a new class of alloys, and attract much attention due to their unique properties. Since the discovery of a superconducting highentropy alloy (HEA) in 2014, the materials research on HEA superconductor is a hot topic. We have found that Hf 21 Nb 25 Ti 15 V 15 Zr 24 body-centered-cubic (BCC) HEA is a new superconductor with the superconducting critical temperature T c of 5.3 K. We briefly discussed the comparison of cocktail effect of T c among BCC HEA superconductors.
