New Scalaranes from the Nudibranch Glossodoris atromarginata and Its Sponge Prey

Abstract: Two new scalaranes (1 and 2) have been isolated from the dorid nudibranch Glossodoris atromarginataand its prey. The structures were deteremined by spectral techniques and confirmed by chemical methods. Compounds 1 and 3 showed selective cytotoxic activity against human thyroid carcinoma.

“…collected from Koh-Tao, Surat-Thani Province, a minor scalarane derivative (6) was isolated from the hexane extract [10]. The structure determination of 6 was carried out by means of spectroscopic analysis to show that the compound, designated as 12-epideacetyl-19α-acetoxy-20α-methoxyscalaran [11], was a new member of the tetracarbocyclic sesterterpenes, possessing an attached dihydrofuran moiety with two acid-labile acetal carbons.…”

“…This structural feature is quite common in the homoscalarane series but unusual in the scalaranes, and in particular it has been encountered only in nudibranch metabolites. In fact, in addition to 12-deacetoxy-12-oxo-deoxoscalarin (80), previously isolated from Indian Glossodoris atromarginata [44] , only one 12-keto-scalarane, 12-deacetoxy-12-oxo-18-epi-scalaradial, from Pacific nudibranch Chromodoris youngbleuthi [45] , has been previously reported.…”
