“…By charge-injection doping at an MS interface, one can use the polymer semiconductor as the active element in thin-film diodes (Tomozawa et al, 1987(Tomozawa et al, , 1989 and field-effect transistors (FET's) (Burroughes et al, 1988;Garnier et al, 1994;Drury et al, 1998). Tomozawa et al (1987Tomozawa et al ( , 1989) demonstrated the first example of an electronic device component fabricated by casting the active polymer directly from solution; even these early diodes exhibited excellent current-voltage characteristics.…”

“…[4][5][6][7][8][9] Different from the traditional conductors, the charge carriers in conjugated polymers are some self-localized nonlinear excitations, such as solitons, polarons, or bipolarons, which are inherent features of quasi-one-dimensional conducting polymer associated with various structural and charge distortions, depending on the properties of the polymer chain as well as on the concentration of charge doping. [8][9][10][11][12] In trans-PA, the most important quasi-particles responsible for the charge transport are solitons serving as domain walls to distinguish the two opposite bond length alternation patterns which might coexist in undisturbed trans-PA because of the two-fold ground state energetical degeneracy.…”

“…1 Conjugated polymers are now used as active materials in a wide variety of prototype applications such as light emitting diodes 2 and organic transistors. 3,4 As a first stage of an investigation it is important to obtain insight into the electronic properties of the undoped neutral compounds and to determine the characteristics of hole injection processes and light emission in connection with luminescence phenomena. Most of the interesting chemistry and physics of conjugated polymers is associated with the details of the electronic structure at the valence and conduction band edges and, in this connection, various electron spectroscopies can be used as tools for diagnosis of the relevant electronic and geometric properties.…”
