New species and combinations in Calvitimela and Tephromela from the southern subpolar region

Abstract: The new species Calvitimela austrochilenis Fryday and Tephromela superba Fryday are described: the former from several collections from southern Chile and one from Marion Island, and the latter from southern South America (including the Falkland Islands), Campbell Island, (New Zealand), and Antarctica. Four new combinations are also made in Tephromela: T. atrocaesia (Nyl. ex Cromb.) Fryday from Îles Kerguelen, Heard Island, South Georgia, and southern South America; T. atroviolacea (Flot.) Fryday from southern… Show more

“…In addition, these specimens have small widely ellipsoidal ascospores of c. 10 x 5-6 μm. Fryday (2011) states that it is frequent in the Falkland Islands and Isla de los Estados, but very rare in other locations like Kerguelen Islands and Argentinian Tierra del Fuego.…”

“…2018) but, as can be seen from the number of ‘Associated Species’ identified only to genus or included in the keys only as “sp.”, many more remain to be fully investigated. Notes on many of these taxa can be found on the websites Lichens of the Southern Subpolar Region (Fryday 2018) or Lichens of the Falkland Islands (Fryday 2019). These additional taxa are often known from only a single collection, or material is otherwise insufficient to formulate an adequate description or to select a good type specimen.…”

“…We leave these problems unresolved until a better sampling of Calvitimela s. lat. has been achieved, perhaps including Southern Hemisphere taxa (Fryday 2011) and Heppsora , a south Asian genus (Awasthi & Singh 1977), for which DNA could not be obtained for the current study.…”
