New species and records of the genus Lipotactes (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae: Lipotactinae) from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand

Abstract: Six new species of the genus Lipotactes Brunner, 1898 are described: three species from Vietnam – L. serratussp. nov., L. angulatussp. nov., L. productussp. nov.; two species from Cambodia – L. discussp. nov. and L. samkossp. nov.; and one species from Thailand – L. saengerisp. nov. The diagnostic characters are illustrated. Additional records are reported for L. vietnamicus Gorochov, 1993 and L. azureus Gorochov, 1996. The striking azure blue color of the alive male of L. azureus that contrasts with the green… Show more

“…This tribe possibly contains only one recent genus, Lipotactes Brunner-Wattenwyl, 1989, with numerous Asiatic species; here it is subdivided into nine subgenera, and some new data on their distribution and taxonomy, including descriptions of new species and subspecies taxa, are given. However, it is reasonable to note that sometimes this tribe is considered as a separate subfamily (Ingrisch, 1995(Ingrisch, , 2021Tan et al, 2020), but such status of this taxon is insufficiently grounded, and here I prefer to use a more morphologically logical hypothesis about its belonging to the subfamily Tympanophorinae, because most of the differences proposed by the first author for the separation of his Lipotactinae from Tympanophorinae may be found within some other subfamilies of Tettigoniidae. The study is based on the material (including the types of new taxa) deposited at the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Saint Petersburg.…”

“…Tan et al (2020a) and Heller et al (2021a) combined calling songs and stridulatory anatomy to address species delineation in Lipotactes alienus-cum-virescens and Mecopoda elongata species complexes. In the case of Lipotactes Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1898, Tan et al (2020a) provided a foundation for the further taxonomic progress of these little-known katydids from Southeast Asia (Ingrisch 2021, Gorochov 2021. These examples demonstrate the importance of combining bioacoustics and traditional taxonomy to identify species of katydids from Southeast Asia.…”
