New species and records of Neotropical ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)

Abstract: A review of the Neotropical Coccinellidae in the Prague Museum, also including to a lesser extent material from other collections, has led to the description of 14 new species from Brazil, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela, two new combinations and 16 first records for countries. The new species described are Cyrea napoensis, Dilatitibialis manaus (Brachiacanthini), Neaporia chucanti, Prodilis saopaulo, P. pastaza and P. qedi (Cephaloscymnini), Siola karpish (Chnoodini), Calloeneis veraguas (Cryptognathini)… Show more

“…The fauna of ladybird beetles of Ecuador was estimated to consist of 199 species (González 2015a(González , 2015b(González , 2016Szawaryn 2015;Szawaryn & González 2017;González & Větrovec 2021). Examination of coccinellids recently collected in Yanayacu Biological Station in Napo Province in Ecuador revealed 37 native species of ladybirds representing the following tribes: Brachiacanthini (six species in three genera), Coccidulini (two species in one genus), Coccinellini (seven species in three genera), Chnoodini (three species in three genera), Epilachnini (17 species in two genera), and Hyperaspidini, Ortaliini and Scymnini (each with one species).…”

“…Of the Andean countries, the Peruvian fauna of ladybird beetles is the most diverse, exceeding 400 species (González 2007); however, in many countries, the diversity of coccinellids is very poorly studied (e.g., Bolivia, Ecuador). Recent investigation of the material collected in Ecuador resulted in descriptions of numerous new species (González 2015a;Szawaryn & González 2017;González & Větrovec 2021). An examination of new material from Napo Province collected in 2009 revealed many new species and new country records which are herein described.…”

“…Conservation of coccinellids and the ecosystem services they provide is crucial, but knowledge concerning factors influencing their richness and abundance within different ecosystems is lacking in the tropics. Despite recent advances in knowledge of tropical coccinellids (e.g., González & Větrovec, 2021; Nestor‐Arriola & Toledo‐Hernández, 2019; Rodríguez‐Vélez, 2018), diversity in the tropics is still largely unexplored. Tropical species have distinct life histories and physiologies; furthermore, ecological communities are assembled differently across latitude (Sheldon, 2019) and different community responses to disturbance may be expected compared with those in temperate regions.…”

“…Coccinellidae is one of Coleoptera's family that consisted seven sub-families, Epilachninae, Coccinellinae, Chilocorinae, Coccidulinae, Ortaliinae, Scymninae, dan Sticholotidinae [8]. These sub-families were known as predator for small insect such as aphid, insect eggs etc [9]. The biodiversity of coccinellid is high, 5,000 species were estimated entire the world and Indonesia, 300 species were reported [10].…”
