Observations were made on Magelona johnstoni Fiege, Licher & Mackie, 2000 and Magelona mirabilis (Johnston, 1865) maintained in a laboratory aquarium. Burrowing, feeding, palp regeneration, lateral pouch function, and behaviour were studied. The two morphologically similar (and co-occurring) species exhibited different behaviours and feeding strategies. Individuals of M. johnstoni were seen to undertake lateral sinuous movements of the thorax, both within and outside the burrow. These movements often occurred simultaneously in several animals, and on occasion, semi-emergent pairs also made direct thoracic contact. This behaviour generally took place between April and July and was likely associated with reproduction; published works suggest spawning may take place between May and August. The morphology and function of abdominal lateral pouches was investigated through SEM images, experimental observation, and consideration of literature accounts.

Th e paper describes the structure of macrozoobenthos inhabiting Kuwait's waters (northwestern Arabian Gulf). Material for the study was collected from 17 stations in December 2004. A total of 270 species of macrozoobenthos and representatives of higher taxonomic groups belonging to 10 phyla were recorded and identifi ed. Species diversity was highest in polychaetes, gastropods, bivalved molluscs and crustaceans (83, 51, 52 and 38 species, respectively). Quantitative estimates of macrozoobenthos was studied in this geographic region for the fi rst time. In the depth of 2-20 m the abundance of macrozoobenthos averaged 795 ind./m 2 . Polychaetes, gastropods and crustaceans prevailed in the sublittoral zone. In assessing species diversity the ecological indices of Shannon-Wiener, Simpson, Pielou and Margaleff were used. Th e obtained results point out that in Kuwait's waters the diversity of macrozoobenthos is relatively high while the level of dominance is low. It was also found that in Kuwait Bay macrozoobenthos is less diverse than in other locations of the region.

A systematic account of a collection of polvchaete annelids from four Kuwaitian islands, Arabian Gulf, is given together with ecological notes. The whole collection comprises 45 species, in 22 families. Of these, four species are named as new and ten are recorded as new to the fauna of the Arabian Gulf. The new species and records are: Anastrosyllis rigida, Brania balani new combination, Perinereis nigropunctata, Perinereis vancaurica, Onuphis eremita, Pkyh kubbarensis sp. nov., Scolelepis indica, Poecilochaetus serpens, Mesochaetopterus minutus, Parasclerocheilus branchiatus, Scyphoproctus aciculatus sp. nov., Clymenura annulata sp. nov., Pista unibranchiata and Telothelepus macrothoracicus sp. nov.
